Projects / Residential / M30 House

The design of a house in Ribeirao Preto, a city with a hot climate located in the northeast of the state of Sao Paulo, must be treated with great care: all facades that receive sunlight ought to be protected, to avoid direct exposure to internal environments, even during winter. As part of the various studies that led to the final design of the house, the “U” shaped typology proved to be the best solution, ensuring that the majority of spaces were shaded during times of highest solar incidence.

As a way of guaranteeing the privacy of its residents, the house visually integrates with social environments, while protecting the leisure area from the surroundings. A circulation adjacent to the laundry room, positioned as a sun screen on the front facade, frees up the three internal recesses of the residence for garden areas, allowing all views to open up to the landscaping.

The center of the land, an element of visual connection between the living spaces, is the place for the swimming pool. There, surrounded by water, gardens and the arms of the house, the residents enjoy a spatial quality and microclimate. Three planes of sliding doors can be opened and completely integrate this external space with the internal space through generous spans of 8.90m (living room and TV) and 7.00m (dining room and balcony). This set of “L” shaped rooms, with ceiling heights varying between 3.80m and 2.80m, are separated from the kitchen and bedroom spaces through oak wood sliding doors.

The passage space between the bedrooms gained a linear garden, contained between planes of glass and hollow elements (the same ones that also protect the entrance hall and garage space), creating an atmosphere of light and nature for a transition space between the scale of coexistence and intimacy. The hollow elements behave like horizontal brises ideal for northern sunlight, as they are the necessary union between permeability and light: at the same time as they guarantee natural ventilation, they also serve as a screen, guaranteeing visual control (who is inside, sees outside, but whoever is outside does not see inside).
